Who billed the purchase?

Look for your Buffer subscription document with the party that billed the purchase. For direct payments, start in Buffer; for App Store or Google Play purchases, use the relevant store. Buffer explicitly says it cannot provide receipts for purchases through those stores.

Start with the confirmation email for the payment you need. Check whether it comes from Buffer, Apple or Google and which account it belongs to. The name of a social profile you manage in Buffer does not determine where to find the purchase document.

If you don’t know the purchase channel and have no confirmation, ask the person who bought the subscription. You need the purchasing account and payment channel, not their login details.

Direct Buffer billing: open the specific payment

Buffer’s official help page gives these steps. The labels match its documentation so you can compare them with the interface:

  1. In your Buffer account, click the profile avatar and open Plans & Billing.
  2. Go to Invoices & Receipts.
  3. Select View beside the payment you need.
  4. Choose Download invoice for the invoice or Download receipt for the payment receipt.

Buffer also says the payment email contains an invoice-download link. If you find that email, you can start with the link.

Choose the document the recipient needs: Download invoice for an invoice, Download receipt for a payment receipt. If you are unsure, agree this with them first. This guide does not assess the document’s accounting or tax suitability.

Before saving, compare the account or customer, payment date, amount and stated period with the purchase you need. A filename containing Buffer is not enough. The number of social channels you manage does not determine the number of documents or how to allocate costs between channels.

Mobile-store purchase: return to the original transaction

For an App Store subscription, use Apple’s purchase history and the option to resend the receipt. For Google Play, Buffer points to the purchase email or Activity in Google Payments, where you open the individual transaction’s receipt.

Buffer’s mobile-store subscription guide links to the relevant procedures. Use the account that actually made the purchase. If you cannot access it, ask its authorised user for the original document. Don’t look for a store payment in Buffer’s direct billing history.

When someone else needs to download the document

If you cannot see billing or a colleague bought the subscription, ask the person with access to that purchase for the specific document. The help pages do not establish permissions for every situation; a social media manager’s job title alone is not enough.

Fill in only the details you know. Leave out unknown fields:

Select the text, copy it into an email and fill in the details in square brackets.

Ask for the document, not a password or account access. If the payment cannot be found, you need to know so you can mark it as missing when handing over the documents.

Make clear which payment the document belongs to

Save the original downloaded file and include a short note when sending it: supplier Buffer, payment date, amount and purchasing account. Describe discrepancies separately; don’t present another document as a replacement for the missing one.

Hypothetical example: a colleague sends a social profile’s performance report when you need the Buffer subscription document. Bring the request back to the particular payment and explicitly ask for an invoice or receipt. The report covers social media results; this task needs a document for the service purchase.

You are finished when you pass on the original document matching the payment, or precisely identify the payment still missing and whom you asked to find it.
