First, distinguish Sync from Publish
Obsidian Sync synchronises notes across devices; Obsidian Publish puts them on the web. They are two different paid services with their own Sync and Publish sections in the Obsidian account. The documentation directs you to Billing for purchase invoices.
Establish whether you need a document for Sync, Publish or purchases of both services. This helps identify the right purchase; it does not mean you must receive two separate invoices.

Find the invoice through Billing
Obsidian’s official documentation gives this route:
Sign in to the Obsidian account used to pay for the purchase. →
- Sign in to the Obsidian account used to pay for the purchase.
- Open Billing.
- Next to Invoices and refunds, select View.
- If several invoices appear, select the one you need and use View to open it or Download to save it.

The English labels match the documentation and help you recognise the items on the page. This route comes from Obsidian’s public guide, not a purchase tested in a private account.
We recommend comparing the service, purchase period and amount on the downloaded document with the purchase you need. If a detail is unclear, do not guess. Ask the person who made the purchase to confirm what the document relates to.
Use both services? Check both purchases
When gathering documents for both Sync and Publish, you can make two short notes:
| What you need | What to note about the document you find |
|---|---|
| Obsidian Sync purchase | The purchase period, amount and name of the file where you saved the document. |
| Obsidian Publish purchase | The purchase period, amount and name of the file where you saved the document. |
This table is a checking aid, not a description of Obsidian’s billing rules. If one document covers both purchases, record the same file for both. Do not split a document just to give each row a different file.
Someone else made the purchase
If you cannot access the paying account, ask the person who bought the service for the original document. You do not need their password or the contents of their notes. Adapt this message to the purchase:
If you are unsure of the service or amount, say so in the request rather than adding an estimate. The purchaser can then confirm which purchase the file relates to.
Hand over the document for the verified purchase
Once you have matched the document to the right purchase, hand over the original downloaded file. If its purpose is unclear, add a short note: Sync, Publish or both purchases you were looking for.
The documented route uses the account’s billing area. To obtain the document this way, you do not need to export the vault — the folder containing your notes — or share its contents.
Source and scope of this guide
Obsidian’s official purchase and invoice documentation, checked on 13 October 2026, describes the services and the route Billing → Invoices and refunds → View. The purchase checks, table and request message are our recommendations for handing over the document. This guide does not assess its tax treatment.
